The ban on dancing in Elmore City was instituted before statehood, in an attempt to keep the Chickasaw Nation town clear of carousing. Mary Ann Temple-Lee, junior class officer and daughter of the school board president, remembered years later that opposition to legalizing dancing was headed by the clergy.
Was dancing ever illegal in America?
1980. In the rural Christian town of Elmore City, Oklahoma, dancing has been strictly forbidden since 1898, on moral grounds. In 1980, students from Elmore City High School initiate a proposal to overturn the ban so that they can have a senior prom.
Fort Smith city directors recently repealed a 1953 ordinance that essentially outlawed public dancing on Sundays. Locals who knew about the law called it the Footloose ordinance, nicknamed for the 1984 movie starring Kevin Bacon about a town that banned dancing and rock music.

The seniors of Elmore High School wanted to plan a senior prom, but dances were against the law thanks to a not-forgotten ordinance from the late 1800s that forbade dancing within the city limits.
