Question: Why are my two cats fighting all of a sudden?

Sometimes sudden outbursts are caused by unease about territories in the home. Cats are naturally territorial, but friendly cats have learned to share their space peacefully. Your cats territorial protection instinct can also be triggered if stray cats are outside and your cats can see or smell them.

Why is one of my cats suddenly attacking the other?

Some of the underlying non-medical causes for aggression between cats in the same household include fear, lack of socialisation, inappropriate introduction of a new cat, overcrowding (i.e. not enough vertical or horizontal space, too few resources etc), redirected aggression, play and predation.

What to do about 2 cats that fight?

You dont want to get in the middle of two fighting cats, so try to distract them instead, with a loud noise or sudden movement to break their concentration on their fight. Dont punish your cat. Never punish your cat for aggressive behavior toward another cat. Punishment can make fearful or aggressive behaviors worse.

Do bonded cats ever fight?

Many bonded cats enjoy play fighting and will chase each other, roll around and bat each other with their paws. Play fighting is often silent, with plenty of gaps in between as each cat repositions itself. The biting is gentle and causes no injury or pain to the recipient and the claws are usually retracted.

Is it bad to separate bonded cats?

It is very important for rescuers to know when two cats from the same home can be adopted out separately, and when they must go together. Separating a bonded pair is very traumatic on the cat. They will mourn the loss of their companion, they can become depressed, and even develop behavioural issues.

Can bonded cats break up?

Cats can form very tight feline friendships, and a bonded pair can be difficult to separate. Bonded cats that have been together for many years may suffer depression or behavior issues when separated. Thats why animal shelters that receive a pair of bonded cats work hard to place them together.
